It's Starts in Our Own Backyard

Many of us living here in Alameda view our natural and cultural resources as especially deserving of protection. We have learned to respect the compromises necessary between the pressures of development and the preservation of our native endangered species - such as eel grass and the least tern - and we are unusually wary of the forces that threaten the natural character of our city.

At the same time, we understand that our environment extends beyond our own backyards, far beyond the Sierras where we hike, camp and ski, and beyond the Pacific Ocean where we sail and fish, to the entire planet Earth.

We know, therefore, that everything we can do to conserve energy, to recycle, to handle toxic waste responsibly, and to reduce air and water pollution - multiplied by the many thousands of households and businesses here in this community, has a tremendous, positive impact on the global environment.
